My Story

Tracy Berg’s debut book is a medical history and biography of the Berg family.

As a youngster, while living on the military base in Belgium Tracy became aware of the grand status of her aunt and uncle, Mary, and Ralph Berg. When Tracy returned from a weekend field trip with her school in May 1973, her parents and siblings were mesmerized by the surprise visit from Mary and Ralph Berg, to the point no one even noticed Tracy was away. After Ralph and Mary helped Tracy when she was ill and diagnosed with diabetes in 1974, this awareness of grandness eventually landed Tracy in medical school and then surgical residency. Upon returning to Spokane in 1995 with knowledge of the mortality of blue babies generally improving with surgery, yet the rare blue baby defect Jason Berg had, complex transposition, was not in the repairable category, Tracy began asking her uncle, surgeon to surgeon as well as niece to uncle how Ralph Berg did what he did during the pivotal decade of 1970 to 1980 while parenting and trying to find a surgical repair for his son Jason.

Tracy graduated from WSU with a BS and MS, then from University of Maryland with her MD, Tracy stayed in Baltimore, Maryland and did her surgical residency at University of Maryland and Shock Trauma. She returned to Spokane in 1995.

She established her private practice in Spokane Valley and enjoyed all aspects of her career and life. It was in 2006 that she was so fortunate to gather the beginnings of this book from her regal, retired and expert researcher Uncle Ralph. This book has been a journey and an amazing growth experience.
